Philanthropy

The United Women in Business Foundation supports philanthropic causes across all three of it’s national chapters in Chicago, New York City and Washington DC. UWIB philanthropy strives to provide members with unique opportunities to give back to their communities in fun, meaningful ways.

Chicago

UWIB Chicago kicked off philanthropic efforts in the Summer of 2014. The very first event was a partnership with Bright Pink and IBM to host an educational workshop on women’s health during Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The event was a huge success and a great reminder on the importance of staying informed.

Upwardly Global, another UWIB partner, is a non-profit devoted to providing skilled and educated immigrants, refugees, and asylees with the tools they need to overcome the numerous barriers to professional employment. UWIB volunteer sessions include reviewing resumes, practicing interviewing skills, and speed-networking.

We’re always looking for new philanthropic groups to partner with for future events. If you have any suggestions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.

New York City

Since kicking off in April 2014, UWIB NYC philanthropy has successfully organized charity events with a wide array of non-profits throughout New York City. To date, partners have included Upwardly Global, The Bowery Mission, America Needs You and New York Cares. In September UWIB NYC helped prepare and serve dinner at The Bowery Mission, also known as New York City’s busiest restaurant serving over 1,200 homeless men and women each day. As part of an ongoing commitment since October 2014 with America Needs You, UWIB volunteers have worked as substitute career coaches working with first generation college students on a variety of curriculum spanning interviewing skills to complex problem solving. With New York Cares UWIB volunteered at the St. Francis Xavier shelter by cleaning the premises and ensuring the shelter was in optimal welcoming condition for homeless patrons.

UWIB NYC is open to all opportunities to help organizations in need, particularly those that share the organization’s vision for fostering cultural, professional and personal enrichment through education and community building. If you would like to get involved or have a volunteering opportunity in the NYC area for UWIB, please get in touch: lina.yeh@uwibfoundation.org.

Washington DC

UWIB DC has entered into a partnership with N Street Village, a community of empowerment and recovery for homeless and low-income women in Washington, D.C. With comprehensive services addressing both emergency and long-term needs, they help women achieve stability and make meaningful gains in their housing, income, employment, mental health, physical health, and addiction recovery.

UWIB DC also volunteers monthly at Luther Place Night Shelter, preparing and serving dinner for up to 31 women who reside at the temporary night shelter. During their stay, residents focus on gaining stability and access to income and housing resources. UWIB members are able to connect with the women, as well as provide the sustenance of a healthy meal. When we are not serving dinner, DC also supports N Street by administering drives for needed supplies and providing volunteers for big events.
